New from AZ

Post by azrunner70 » Sun Oct 17, 2004 1:53 pm

Hi,
I'm Sara. I've been reading the board for a couple of years and finally decided to join. I live in AZ, I like to run and I'm 34. I have two awesome kids and I've been married for 13 years. I'm a teacher. My kids used to play soccer, I'm blonde and I drive a Volvo but I am not a republican nor a former pr0n star. Ha ha. Lil joke.

Umm...what else--I've been listening to Everclear for about 5 years. I listen to them while I run. I've seen them twice, met Art and Craig once for about 30 seconds. I'm excited to see Art here in AZ. I joined the $40 fan club like a big sucker. I look forward to getting to know you guys. Please be nice to me. I'm old and fragile.

Hi guys :D

I keep trying to reply but it doesn't come up. Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Anyway, I used to teach Spanish but now I teach life skills in juvenile detention, along with managing the transition program there.

It's nice to know there are others in my age bracket! Thanks for the welcome. Silver Ginger, what do you teach?

Sara

I teach pre-school age kids. 2 years 9months - 5 years. Not quite the same as teaching juvenilles in detention, but it's rewarding in it's own way. :D

Hey, Sara! Welcome to the boards.

I'm going to be teaching Secondary Spanish sometime after I get out of college in 2008. Got any tips?

Silver Ginger, I admire you. I used to volunteer in my son's preschool. I swear, it was WAY harder working with little ones than it is teaching detainees. You must have a lot of patience.

And tips for you Elizabeth: Hmm...don't smile until December. Just kidding. I hate that advice.

I've found that two of the most important elements of a good lesson plan is a strong opening activity (journal entry, verb conjugation exercise, etc.) to get the kids on task, and a fun enrichment activity (role play, TPR activity, etc) somewhere in the lesson to help the kids connect with the content. My philosophy is: better to have an interesting, slightly noisy (but not chaotic) classroom vs. a quiet, boring one. But I know a lot of good teachers who disagree and insist on total control, so who knows. Go with your instincts. :D
