The first Gulf War probably. The TV channels kept showing "War Updates" instead of Scooby Doo cartoons. It was very annoying.

When the Challenger exploded on takeoff. I even remember some of the horrible jokes going around at the time, too.

I think this was probably my first too. I remember my mom telling me about where the war was going on and why there were oil spills. I said whoever made them should be put in a rocket and sent "far, far away". Heehe, I was always a bit radical.

I guess the 'biggest' news story I can remember was the news Elvis had died. I remember hearing the news and my eldest sister went absolutely hysterical. She was running around crying and wailing like a banshee! I also remember the tv stations playing loads of his films afterwards, and being forced by her to watch them!

I remember that day...walking home from wrestling practice, stopped by the neighborhood store, found no one around until I walked back into the electronics section where everyone was watching, stunned, on the TV.

That's hard to say...it's hard to tell what I remember from first hand observation and what I've seen on the History Channel from about that time. Probably the end of the Vietnam War, but I can't be sure, the images are so widespread and powerful.
